Strengthening cooperation in disaster risk reduction of water rescue units in Upper-Tisa Region
Waste transferred by rivers are a major risk for the biosphere and for the communities located in floodplains. Floating plastic particles, like bags and PET bottles pose special hazard for the water habitats as they could cause disease and death for animals. According to the data of the Hungarian General Directorate of Water Management, plastic contamination is a major issue in the Upper-Tisza River: they collected 15.500 m3 plastic waste only in this region between 2012-2017 with the cost of 105 million forints (330.000 EUR). Plastic waste contamination is also a risk for the water management infrastructure: sedimented flotsam slows down the waterflow in downpipes and can damage built structures. In order to effectively manage these issues the involvement of rescue units is inevitable. PLASTIC CUP is an example of making horizontal policy aspects into motion in a PPP initiative.
PLASTIC CUP is a gamified waste-collection event with the aim to remove plastic contamination from river Tisza. Participant teams are competing in different rounds. The objective is to facilitate learning-by-doing knowledge sharing on DRR and environmental protection between international flood rescue teams providing safety services during the CUP.
