Sediment Research and Management at the Danube River II
(SEDimentforschung und -management an der DONau II)
SEDDON-II continues the basic achievements reached in the former SEDDON project and focuses on the implementation of the suggested improvements.
Outputs and results of SEDDON-II will be integrated into the EUSDR-flagship project DREAM (Danube River Research and Management) and the proposed Danube Transnational Program project Danube Sediment. By delivering an improved understanding and innovative measures, SEDDON-II contributes to EUSDR. Outcomes contribute significantly to the Danube RBMP by providing concrete measures concerning sediment transport, morphodynamics and habitat diversity to keep and/or improve the ecological status. Input is given for Danube River Flood Risk Management Plan, related to the minimization of the effects of hydraulic structures on flood water levels or that of the effects of floodplains in water retention. Contribution to EU renewable energy directive with respect to sediment continuity at hydropower plants is also provided. The Navigation strategy is supported by optimized engineering measures to increase fairway depth. Input to the EU Flora-Fauna-Habitat Directive is given through improved measures to enhance habitat dynamics.
The programme’s thematic objective is to jointly develop pilots and infrastructures in order to define proper measures aimed at securing and/or improving the status of water bodies both in qualitative and quantitative terms.
The results lead to concrete suggestions of a new river management strategy to improve the ecological condition and flood risk management of the Upper and Middle Danube river water bodies, where sediments play an essential role. Partners collaborate to collect data on the field, process and analyse data and model the sediment transport with physical and numerical tools. For this initiative the infrastructural circumstances will be established and calibrated. Experiences will be summarized in joint conclusions. The project contains wide range of field measurements and continuous observations as well.
SEDDON II received a Letter of Recommendation from EUSDR PA5 in 2016.
